The Sound of Basketball

Becoming a nun is the eternal sacrifice one can do in the eyes of G-d. Shelly Pennefather, Villanova Basketball alumni, joined The Poor Clare nuns and never looked back.
Elizabeth Merrill’s “Whatever Happened to Villanova Basketball Star Shelly Pennefather? ‘So I Made This Deal With G-d.’” explains why Pennefather joined the monastery. She unveils her longing to have a greater purpose in life by helping others.
Pennefather was obsessed with The Sound of Music and it was the only movie she had ever seen. Her love for that movie aided in her decision to become a nun. Although Pennefather was the best women’s basketball player at Villanova, she played because G-d told her to. To this day, Pennefather still holds the record at Villanova for all-time.
Merrill describes with such detail how Pennefather still feels to this day and how she can still hold a conversation with her old teammates. This adds a layer of ethos and personality to the story.
This story will do well with social media and video but Pennefather has never seen a cell phone so it might be a struggle.
